Practical Nurse

Program Description

The Practical Nurse program provides students with the education to enter a highly respected and challenging health care career. If you have a desire to work in dynamic environments providing high quality nursing care in hospitals, long-term care facilities, community and other health-care services, then consider a career as a practical nurse. Practical nurses perform assessments and provide prescribed treatments, assist clients with activities of daily living and create safe comfortable environments to optimize health outcomes. Practical nurses collaborate with other members of the health care team to help clients meet their physical, emotional and psychological needs.

You will develop, practice and refine your skills in our state-of-the-art clinical simulation, computer and bioscience labs, with direct clinical practice and simulated laboratory experiences occurring throughout your program. Full- and part-time study options are available. (Full-time students complete the program in two calendar years; part-time students complete the program in three years and four months.) Part-time students take courses in the evening, and clinical rotations take place on Sundays and Mondays. Both part-time and full-time students will be required to complete a full-time pre-grad placement in their final semester. This is a full-time unpaid preceptored placement. Students must follow their preceptors rotation of days, evenings and nights equivalent to 40 hours per week.

Admission Requirements

• 5 Credit in WAEC or NECO

Other Requirements

• Current Standard First Aid/CPR Health Care Provider (delivered as part of program)
• Current immunization
• Acceptable criminal records check

Graduates of the programs are employed in long-term care, hospital and community/home care. Graduates have acquired the competencies required to provide high-quality care in all these settings.
